Let's start this creative business off with a post that will become a regular entry: Tubular Comment Nonsense, or perhaps Commentology. Most likely you have observed the nonsense that goes on in comment sections. This nonsense is particularly prevalent on Youtube, because Youtube is huge. Basically, I'm going to post a Youtube link along with some quality comments of the video (I'm sure many of them will be the highly thumbs up rated comments). I'll proceed to say a few words on why the comment is stupid or nonsensical. There you have it, the essence of TCN. Let's give it a try:
Iggy Pop and The Stoogers - Gimme Danger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9_hegaKOaY&feature=fvw
So whenever there is an aging song on youtube (anything pre-95 really), there WILL be comments that assert how music is shit now, and all the good music was made in those days etc. These people are are naive and uninformed.
Here are some classic comments claiming the superiority of Gimme Danger over pop trash of today.
"This song rocks!!! what happened to good music? I stopped listening to the radio about 3 years ago because it is pure crap. MTV is even worse. Nothing but weak boy/girl bands and trashy hip hop. so sad." giantmidget08 3 years ago 8
Yes, major radio stations and MTV suck and play terrible music. But what happened to good music? You mean what happened to good music being played on major entertainment outlets? Good music didn't disappear, it is still being made, it's just not on the radio etc.
Also did they play good music on the radio 6 years ago (given that this comment was made 3 years ago, giantmidget08 stopped listening to the radio about 6 years ago)? No.
"What world are you living in? If I hear one more Emo sing "daddy didn't love me" or "I'm gonna cut my wrist" I might swear off music all together. Music has been going downhill since after the grunge movement of the late 80's early 90's when bands started becoming commercial symbols instead of the soul musicians of the past. All that are left today are the remnant groups of the 80's and 90's and various supergroups. Same thing goes for Rap as well, seeing as how all lyrics say the same thing." goad0073 2 years ago 5
Some wise and true words spoken by goad0073. It does seem like Rap on MTV or what have you all discuss and praise the same thing (bling, money, fancy cars, girls...) - ridiculous stuff that the majority of their fans cannot relate to and yet sing along with anyway. But, again, that's only referring to intellectually devoid rap gangsters. The lyrics of the majority of big rock/pop bands probably all say the same things, as do all the small bands in the same vein of music. (And even good music, made by small or successful bands wax lyrical around the same stuff, they just construct their lyrics better - that's what good lyrics mostly is i.e. good construction, not original subject matter. Imagine saying "all love sonnets are about love so they all suck!")
Obviously bands that aren't on major labels are not "commercial symbols". And that's where the majority of good bands are...Also wasn't Nirvana chastised for being "sellouts". So it would seem that the commercialising happened during the grunge movement (or was the grunge movement), and not merely after...And "...instead of the soul musicians of the past", man I don't even want to get into anymore, so much naive shit in this comment, and I still have a couple more to go. Why did I not only decide to do this post but also promise it will be a regular section. Getting frustrated about stupid people is frustrating.
"I'm 18 and they're one of my absolute favourite bands. I wish more people my age weren't so stupid and listened to more good fucking music!" flowerpower1611 2 years ago 4
Right on, flowerpower1611! I too wish most people your age weren't so stupid. Unfortunately you're one of the stupid ones. Well I don't know about that, maybe just a little naive. What makes you think that in the Stooges heyday the "people [your] age weren't so stupid" and listened to good music like the Stooges? Granted the average major bands of that day were far better than the average today, but I doubt the Stooges had most 18 year old listeners then than now - even if we adjust for population growth.
"17, pretentious is a word i use a lot now a days, if ther were more bands around now with the passion of iggy pop then we would have a better music scene. Sadly these bands are few and far between. Thank the lord for KOl tho." bmjboroboy 2 years ago 7
With the passion of Iggy? Maybe bmjboroboy is right...it's not talent we're lacking today, it's passion...passion to use that talent...hardly any bands or artists these days have passion like Iggy??...Actually, I'm not quite how I would know if a band has the passion of Iggy. Are we talking stage antics, heroin addiction, disrobing, caring about music making, aggressiveness, energy, intensity...I guess most bands don't care about their music and just sit on stage with empty eyes. Also what's "KO1", a band, a youtube user?
"sorry, but youre wrong. of course today's mainstream music sucks, no question, and most music is overproduced shit. i dont know how old you are but you seem to have a very superficial view on today's music... there are great rock bands out there today (do you know the arctic monkeys?)
i didnt mean to be disrespectful but i just cant stand this attitude that everything was better in the old days(do you know abba?). of course i love the stooges, too, else i wouldnt be here commenting this video." bankspackomat 2 years ago
Here we go! Someone a little less naive. We're on the same page bankspackomat...except you said Arctic Monkeys. Who for one are mainstream, and for two, suck.
"bankspackomat you are an artic monkey you dumbass bitch. To days crap is just that crap that's why ever little fagot listens to rap crap and hates rock cause rock sucks nowdays and true rock fans stick the the mother fucking classics. Long live the classics but let this new shit fucking burn and die." KILLEENSHUSBAND4EAE 2 years ago 3
eeek, I don't want to run into this guy. Expecially if I'm wearing my tight'n'gay Lil Wayne/Katie Perry collage t-shirt. I love how this guy KNOWS what true rock is and that "true rock fans stick the the mother fucking classics." I can't say much else because I need to go take a hot bath/cold shower before the veins in my eyes bust.
